Make sure your guests know they have arrived at the right place
Put something out of the ordinary outside, so party guests feel welcome and know they have come to the right place. Balloons, a sign, some streamers, chalk message on the sidewalk, anything that will stand out so people are comfortable they are knocking on the right door.
Greet each guest personally with all your heart
Be there in that moment and welcome them. Shake their hand or give them a hug, whatever you and what you sense they are most comfortable with. Tell them how happy you are that they have come. Compliment their clothes or hair. This step is a super important as the host/hostess you make time to do. The next steps, you can enlist help for, if you are behind and super busy. It is really important you stop and greet each guest yourself, it will help your party guests feel welcome.
Give them a quick tour of the party:
- the designated space for coats & bags and also gifts if necessary
- where to find the restroom
- where the food and drinks are
- Introduce them to someone they don’t know and you think they may hit it off with.
Some Extra Fun Things to Do:
- Greet them with a lei. Well it doesn’t have to be a lei but something that fits in with the theme of the party that they can wear. An inexpensive plastic beaded necklace, a button, or a party hat. I think we all like to walk in and be given a gift, even if is cheesy.
- Have them put on a name tag. Sounds a little dorky but it helps when their are lots of people that don’t know each other. Have them include something fun under their name like their favorite ice cream flavor or their relationship to the guest of honor. It can be a good ice breaker. Above is a welcome table for a birthday party. It has name tags asking for how you know the birthday boy, an apron for the guests to sign, party favor bottle openers and some candy to get the party started! All things to make your party guests feel welcome.
