This list of fun activities to do with dad actually comes from an activity I have done with my dad over the years. My mom started us off by planning these fun activities when we were young and we continue to do some fun activity with my dad each year. This activities list may not fit every dad because it comes from what my dad enjoys doing. However hopefully it will give you some inspiration and you can customize a day of activities that is for the dad in your life. You maybe planning Father’s Day for your dad, your kid’s dad, a spouse’s dad or many people’s dads, but either way this list should help get you inspired to take dad out for a fun activity.
Visit a national park
If you live near a national park take dad and go exploring. I’m sure if you live near a national park you’ve already been but I bet its been a few years. Get online and plan out the days activities, maybe a hike, a place to have a picnic and maybe the rangers are offering a interesting talk or hike that day.
Go camping or RVing
Take dad for a weekend of camping or RVing. It doesn’t matter how you go but go with what your family is most comfortable with, a tent, trailer or an RV. If you don’t have one of your own you can always rent and possibly turn a weekend into a week long summer trip. Also no reason you need to go far to get away, campgrounds are all over the place.
Spend the day at the park
Take dad to the park for the day, this is especially great if dad’s kids are still little. Pack a picnic lunch and fill the car with folding chairs, balls, bats, hoola hops, and all the outdoor games and activities you have. Maybe you can bring along your bikes too. My mom did this for a Father’s day when my brother and I were young, and my grandparents came too. It was the best day, she filled up our RV with food and activities. We went to a big park where there was plenty of parking for the RV, we played with squirt guns most of the day to keep cool and we all had a great day eating and playing. The RV looking back was great because we had a place to keep the food cool, a place to nap and a restroom. If you do want to bring your RV to your local park, you should always check first and see what their rules are first.
Have a pool party
If you have your own pool or one you can easily access one this a great way to spend the day with dad on a hot June day. Both for the kids and adults a pool party is fun and easy way to spend the day. Some food, drinks, pool toys and sunscreen and the day will fly by.
Send dad golfing
I say send dad golfing because I don’t golf but my dad loves it. Thankfully all the men in my family love to golf, so he can go with my brother, uncles and cousins. But maybe you love to golf too, either way its about dad getting to do what he loves. Afterwards you can plan a dinner or lunch together so you can still have time to spend with dad too.
Go to nice buffet
If you haven’t already noticed this list doesn’t include take dad out to brunch or a nice restaurant for dinner, because I think that is what most of us already do. A buffet I think is a little different, you usually spend more time eating and at least in my family a buffet is a special thing we only dp maybe once or twice a year. Its fun for everyone, you can eat whatever and as much as you want and its a longer meal more like 2-3 hours together. You can even fill in the time between eating with some favorite stories of dad.
Visit a local museum
Based on dad’s interests, plan a day at a local museum. A car, history, science or some museum that dad would find interesting. Even if it is a museum he has been to multiple times before most museums are constantly changing or least have one new exhibit to see. Maybe expand your search from just museums to local tours, we did a fascinating tour of a sanitation facility that my dad really found fascinating.
Take a segway tour
A lot of cities have Segway tours and it can be a lot of fun. I think many dad’s like my own love toys like a Segway. It could also be an ATV, Jeep, boat or any fun toy for them to play with for the day. It may involve a tour or your own city, which most of us never take the time to do.
Go to a baseball game
Take dad to a baseball game or any game he enjoys. Its just another fun way to spend the day with dad
Take a bike ride
This could go along with most any of the other ideas for Father’s day. Take dad on a bike ride for brunch or to spend the day at the park. Simple idea but just makes the day a little more special.
Go to a car show
If dad is a car lover, take him to a car show. Or if there isn’t a show going on in your area take him to a dealership to browse the latest cars. My dad was in the market for a new truck one year so we spent the day shopping for a truck.
Work on a project together
There are some dad’s who love to do projects, fix things and build things. Building a deck together maybe a little more work than he wants to do on Father’s day but a small project with his kids he may enjoy. How about a birdhouse kit or finding a fun DIY project online.
Spend a day at the beach
Like the park you can bring a cooler with food, some toys, fun activities for dad and folding chairs and spend the day playing at the beach.
